In this article I will try and cover some thoughts on asking for help

on our forums and the importance of sharing ideas / code.

"I have a problem with my code but I dont want to post it on the forums, I fear I will get looked down upon."

First off never feel like you cannot post something on these forums. Tukui.org is probably one of the most active lua communities in existence right now with an endless flow of knowledge and people to help each other out. Even if its the simplest question, ask it. Who knows maybe you will learn a thing or two about it and can help others like you in the future. Plus other users may have the same question / problem as you, so by solving your issue you are potentially solving many other users problems.

"I need help with a AddOn but I do not know where to start, what should I do?"

Ask ask ask! There are some very talented people in this community who would be more than willing to mentor / show you how to achieve a specific idea you have. This is not saying we will do it for you, the only way to learn is to dive in and start coding it yourself, however we will definitely set you on the right track for success. Keep in mind some ideas are just not feasibly possible due to various situations but do not let that stop you from getting your ideas started!

"I developed something awesome and want to show it off, how should I go about doing this?"

By all means share it! With enough attention your AddOn idea can potentially blow up into something huge and awesome! That is what is fascinating about AddOns, you cant really tell what people will love or hate its all a game of chance. The paste code feature on the website is a great way to share your code as well. Many authors may feed off your ideas and branch them off into their own projects. In a sense showing off your skills can only help people hone their own. This is not to say an author should take code directly from you and give no credits however, this is basically a slap to the face for the original author. Give back to the community once in a while, many people will appreciate it greatly.

"I have a lua based question and it has not been answered, what should I do?"

This is something that is hard to explain. Some lua questions are just too in depth and vast for someone to help you make or fix. Coding takes time, a lot of time, and many of the authors on this site are constantly busy not only managing their own projects but helping out others with their own. Some simple advice I can give is have patience, it may take time to do what you want.

"Someone is being rude and or offensive to me on the forums, what should I do?"

This is a hot topic for me. I honestly cannot stand any form of immaturity on these forums, the community is way too professional to be acting like that. The best thing to do in a situation like this is be the bigger man and leave the situation be. Instigating the problem can only make it worse and not only do you give the community a bad reputation, you make yourself look bad. Keep it nice, keep it clean, and most of all keep it professional.
